Cougar Connect: October is Here!

Clyde Hill Elementary cougar logo mark

It was wonderful to see so many families at Curriculum Night this past Monday!  If you were not able to join us, many teachers are sharing their presentations via email as well as any other materials they may have shared with their families.

The next community event at Clyde Hill will be hosted by the Clyde Hill PTA this coming Thursday, October 10th.  Bingo Night returns to Clyde Hill!

Smart Watches

As shared in on of the earliest Cougar Connects, smart watches are allowed at school as long as they are used only as watches.  When students begin using them to text, play games, or engage in other behaviors that detract from learning or distract the learning of others around them, the use of these devices no longer meets the expectation set by Clyde Hill Elementary.  Below is the information shared in the August 30, 2024, Cougar Connect.  If your child(ren) is/are wearing smart watches to school, please take a moment to review these expectations with them.

Cell Phones and Smart Watches

The expectation at Clyde Hill is that if a student is bringing a cell phone to school it is for after school purposes and remains in their backpack on silent throughout the school day.  A student should not be accessing their cell phone during the school day.

For smart watches, watches should be used as watches and at most timers/stop watches, but they should not be used for games, texting, phone calls, social media, recording device, or any other apps beyond the basic function of telling time or being a stopwatch/timer.

The first time a student does not meet this expectation, they will be reminded of the expectation and asked to put the phone away or return the smart watch to its watch function.  Should this behavior happen again, the device will be brought to the office and the student's grown-up will be asked to pick it up.  In the unlikely event this behavior continues for a third time, the student will not be allowed to bring the device to school.

Clyde Hill Elementary is not responsible for lost or stolen personal items that students choose to bring to school.

Online Monitoring

Since we are writing about technology, this is a great time to offer the reminder to check your child(ren)'s online presence.  We know that as the weather turns wetter and cooler, more students find themselves inside and online.  Since we do not have any students at Clyde Hill who are 13 or older, any family whose student who has a social media account is doing so knowing that the parent is responsible for the content their child(ren)'s post(s).  Additionally, parents are encouraged to routinely look at the content of the text messages their children are sending and receiving.  This is not spying - this is helping your child(ren) learn the expectations you have for their online behavior and the responsibilities that come with this technology.  Lastly, please take a moment to check your child(ren)'s browsing history - particularly on YouTube - to find out what type of sites they are looking at.  As educators, we find ourselves needing to have unusual conversations with students as they bring up a wide variety of topics they partially understand from watching videos on YouTube.  Be the POS - "Parent Over Shoulder" so that you too can participate in these conversations as they allow you to bring your perspective and knowledge to these topics.
